Green Bug review

I'm a natural, chemical free type person. So, when the chance to win a DEET free bug repellent from OBN, came around I signed up! I've never trusted regular bug sprays, but ticks and mosquitoes aren't really good for you either. Bites from either can cause illness. Lyme Disease , Malaria, and West Nile Virus are the most well known. These are terribly debilitating and even life threatening. That being said, it is important to protect yourself as much as possible from the nasty little pests who spread them.

This is the product I received. It smells just like the Big Cedars I remember from Montana. This scent also reminds me of my dad. Not sure why, except maybe he was a carpenter and any fresh wood smell  makes me think of him. Green Bug does have a  strong cedar odor. But then, we love the outdoors and personally, I don't have a problem smelling like it!

Cedar used as a natural pest control is not something new. Cedar chests are specifically used to keep its contents safe from moths. Native Americans rubbed their skin with the needles from Cedar to protect against mosquitoes. I've been told that the reason some of the older houses around this part of the country used cedar lumber in the attic, was to repel insects. They stored a lot of their food up there and needed it to be kept safe.

I went hiking on the trails behind our house and came home with not a single tick. Mind you, these trails seem to be especially bad when it comes to ticks. I'm looking forward to next tick season when I avoid this area for exactly that reason! Now I'll be armed! In fact, that last time we went there my husband found three ticks and I found one. He knows I am always researching natural products and asked if I knew of anything. I said I'd look into it and a few weeks later I noticed the giveaway and thought we should give it a try.

I do wish it were more at the height of bug season around here to give it more of a test....not really, who needs bugs?! One of the nice things about fall, is that there are less of them. But, I am looking forward to next year and giving this a really good work out.

A twist on green smoothies

I think I'll be giving this a try. I've known for a good deal of time the benefits of consuming fermented foods or  beverages. Think, yogurt, sauerkraut, raw cheese or even unpasteurized (unheated)  beer or wine. Yep, they're good for you. You can read more about the benefits of lacto fermentation here on Robyn's blog. Since I'm not using dairy right now while I'm on my determined course to lose weight (I think they call it a "diet"), I'll give this a try in my smoothies. Looks really easy! I don't have much time right now and this appears to be even simple enough for me.

Here is the home page for the green smoothie girl website. Check it out if you are interested in good health, losing weight and just eating right. By the way, I'm not sure of Robyn's age but I believe I read somewhere it's over 40.....she looks pretty healthy! It could be she's doing something right!

Of Dreams and Hard Work

This was a free download at one of the art blogs I follow. I thought I would share it with you. If you are interested in learning to paint with watercolors, she has some good tips and free step by step lessons there. Let's Paint Nature

Did you ever notice that when you really decide to try and make a dream (or goal) happen it suddenly gets hard to do? Well, I have.
To dream about something is easy. People do it every day. To make new goals is easy, they do that every day too. But, as I'm sure you already know when it comes right down to acheiving goals or seeking after dreams, it tends to get hard. And sometimes you lose your hope in that dream.....

I'm feeling a bit discouraged so I thought maybe I should try and encourage someone. Me, maybe. (I'm smiling)  For example,  we had this dream of getting out more and spending time camping and hiking. We've talked about it for a long time. We are really trying to make it happen.....and this is where it gets hard.

On my part, this means getting in shape to do so. I'm working on that, but it's not really all that fun. Exercising and dieting is....kind of like a job you don't really like but, you know you have to do it, in order to get that paycheck.
You can't really have a good time hiking if every time you do, you feel like death may be just around the corner! I'm kidding, it's not quite that bad, but you get the idea. The dream I have, is to sit at the top of that trail and actually enjoy the view and still feel good enough to explore or just sketch and paint in my journal. That's not going to happen if I don't get in shape and lose some weight. By the way I have officially lost a full 10 lbs. I'm not braggin' or anything, well maybe...just a little.

Then, there's the whole, financial end of it. I won't bore you with the details, but we are working on some ways to supplement our income. We just have to find a way to do it. Tim is working 6 and even some 7 day weeks. That is just too much. We have some things going and some ideas but that is requiring work and a lot of our time. So, I hope you don't mind if I just keep talking about our dreams and reading other stories of the ones who are making it happen! I have really enjoyed reading about all these hiking trips. I feel a little out of place at times, knowing we can't compete with them. But, I guess if Tim can read every Everest or outdoor adventure book he can get a hold of, I can read hiking blogs.

That's really what you have to do anyway, don't let go of your dream. Be encouraged by the success of others. Keep working towards it. Don't give up. The harder you work at your dream, the sweeter the realization of it will be.

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel like you too, can become great." ~ Mark Twain

~I love this watercolor painting by one of my favorite artists Toni Kelly. It kind of says what I've been trying to, just in a much more beautiful and visual way. Dreams You can also purchase the print of it at this link. She has some beautiful artwork, take a look around while you're there.

The Inspiration for it all

If you read our blog regularly, you'll notice I've changed the above photo in the header.  It's a picture of the view from the top of Chimney Rock, NC. Tim and I hiked up there in the beginning of August. I wrote a post about that here. Although I made it to the top where the flag is, I didn't go all the way up, there was a trail (and stairs) that went 1.2 miles further. It was hot that day and I knew I just couldn't do anymore. I sat on the stairs and waited while Tim hiked up and saw even more of what we had come to see. The more I thought about that later, the more determined I became to change it. I just wanted to able to make it as far as he did. To do it together.

I've never been athletic or "in shape". Tim has always been. He used to run 15 miles a day for training when he was on the wrestling team in high school. He was good. One of the very dedicated and self controlled types. He would go without food for days, all the while exercising, to lose a few lbs and fit into the weight class he wanted. He got up early to run, went to bed late after running. He lifted weights, ran stairs, in fact he could outrun his coach on those. Whatever it took to win, that's what he did.

Our youngest daughter Jayme took this picture of the mountains when she was visiting in Montana this summer. These mountains are behind the town of Paradise. Tim grew up there. When we were first married we lived there for two years, before moving to Arizona. We're still living in our own little piece of "paradise" here in Appalachia. After all, home is where the heart is. Right?

When he was a teenager he climbed all over those mountains and cliffs. Free climbing, no ropes or safety equipment. Some of those cliffs are what he would describe as moderately difficult to climb. (Or at least it seemed so to a self trained teen.) You can't climb them if you aren't physically fit. He did it just for the pure enjoyment and satisfaction of it. To sit at the top and look at the view, knowing how hard earned it was.
When we lived in Arizona he used to hike often in the Sonoran Desert with his friends. He found equal enjoyment out of this. Hunting and fishing were never a big part of his life . He doesn't watch sports, or play video games, in fact, he's never had much of a hobby of any kind. But, he does love hiking and exploring new places....and he does read a lot!

We moved back to Montana when our children were young. Soon after, we decided to home school and move out to the country. We lived way out....off grid for a while. That was not all it's cracked up to be. I like my electricity, running water and the other amenities of the modern world. In fact, that experience sort of "burned us out" on camping and hiking. We didn't do much of it for a long time.
Eventually, we moved to Tennessee. And yes, we love it here! But, unfortunately, we really haven't done much hiking and camping. Some here and there, but not nearly enough. We intend to change that.

Living on one income in a two income society was and still is hard. It was a choice we made and I don't believe we would change that. But, it did bring some financial difficulties, that also contributed to us not spending time as a family outdoors, as much as we would have liked. It is one of the things we regret.... Word of advice... "Find a way to get outdoors with your family while they are young, you will not be sorry!" I think there are ways to do that even on a very limited budget. I hope to explore some different ideas I have about that,  in a later post.

The fact that Tim worked so hard, would also be part of the reason we didn't do as much as we should have. He worked, so I could stay home and be a full time mom and home school teacher. It was something we both wanted to do for our children. Good things often require sacrifice and this did too. I would like somehow to repay Tim for all those years. It was not easy. He didn't have an office job, or even just a moderately strenuous job. He's worked in construction for over 25 years. From roofing in 115 and over in Arizona, to hanging drywall, painting, framing, pretty much all of it. You name it, he's probably done it.

I'd like to see him find some of that same enjoyment he used to get out of hiking. It's something we both want to do. Saturday, we spent the day in Cookeville at the fall festival. It was fun, but as we were walking around I noticed how oriented it was for children. They had a lot of fun things for them to do. Even a rock climbing wall. I was starting to get kind of melancholy that I didn't have any kids to take around to the different activities. But then, we turned up another street and a sporting goods store was having a sidewalk sale. We spotted the Osprey backpack at the same time. Without saying a word, we just turned and began walking toward it. We realized this and looked at each other and just smiled. Great minds think alike! We spent the next hour or so in the store looking things over and just generally dreaming of all we could do. It was the best part of the day.

This is why I'm working so hard to get in shape. Tim doesn't need to. He works hard everyday and is already there. There isn't an ounce of fat on him. If we want to do this together I have a lot of catching up to do. I'd tell you what I've been doing toward that goal, but that, is also, another post.
No, we'll never summit Everest. :)  But there are achievable summits.....maybe even MT Katahdin, I've always wanted to see Maine. Or maybe the highest peak in the Smokies via the Appalachian Trail. We already have a hike planned next time we make it to Montana with my sister and her husband. One particular trail we have in mind is Virgin Falls.

Chimney Rock and what happened there is not my inspiration, that was just a wake up call. My inspiration, is Tim. He worked hard, so we could realize one dream. Now I'm returning the favor, getting in shape and eating right, so we can tackle the next dream and make it happen. Isn't that what you would do?

The Roaring River

Up the road from our house is a place called The  Roaring River. It was pretty dry. We've gotten a lot of rain since we were there. Flash flood warnings even. So, I'll bet the Roaring River is once again 'roaring.' Up at the top of the falls where the old mill used to be you could walk across the dry river bed. I did, just so I could climb up the rocks and have my pic taken. No, I don't approve of the "modern art" painted on the  cliffs, but it was already there......nice message anyway.

This is also part of the old mill. You have to hike down the river to see this. It's not up by the falls, where people usually go. We went swimming there once with Wes and Jayme. Normally, you would just hike along side of the river, but my "sherpa" (trail guide) decided we needed to climb straight up the side of the mountain to see if we could get to the top of the cliffs that border this river.
It can be done. We did it.

At the top is the nicest meadow. (cow pasture, devoid of cows at this time.)

I found a much less steep mountain 'trail' to get back to the river and we ended up at the swimming hole. It's down river from the main falls (about 1/2 mile). There was actually enough water there to go swimming and I did some waist deep wading in order to get this picture.

We were both wearing water shoes, just in case we decided to go swimming. I don't know as we should be. They do work well  for walking shoes. There is a lot of traction to them. I think some would disapprove of using them for hiking shoes. No support, not enough protection. They are probably right on the protection part.  But....I know that I've been walking a lot of miles in them and my feet and ankles seem to be getting stronger and more supportive of themselves. They are very flexible as minimilist footwear should be. The idea being to make your feet, ankles, tendons and muscles stronger. I wouldn't recommend using them for long stretches, if you aren't conditioned for it. Good article about that here. Adventure in Progress  These are just water shoes. But for now they are doing the job. Although I am having some serious coveting issues over these or these.  I'd like to get Tim this pair. Ok, enough free advertisement! Just kidding.... I do think they would wear better than the water shoes and offer a tad more support and protection without weakening your foot, and ankles. Just my opinion....I can't say from experience.

Tim had thought about getting in, but decided he didn't relish the thought of walking back in sloshing shoes, besides he had a better idea.....  I'm thinking, "the river bed is almost dry we could walk back most of the way in the dry bed......Tim's thinking was, "I need to figure out how this mill worked and straight back up that hillside is the most interesting part of it."

and that is where we went.....It was steeper than the first hillside! He still is puzzled by how it all worked. At one time it must have been quite the operation.

He found a much less strenuous way out.....more round about, but that is what we were there for. To see the countryside, breathe the fresh clean air and get moving!

The end to a perfect day! Rocking sweet babies and listening to the rain.

Ready for fall and a few changes

I am so ready for the cooler temperatures of fall to get here. We actually decided to postpone our camping trip til next weekend as it may be cooler by then. We'll avoid the crowds of this weekend also. As long as, too many other people aren't thinking the same thing. You know what they say about great minds.....

I made a few changes to the blog.....I was getting obsessed about it! I'm not a good designer and I wanted something simpler with not so much color in it. I think it's easier to read that way. Let me know if I improved it or messed it up. Also, I added a "book store". Just some of our favorites and some we'd like to read. The field guides for this area Wildflowers of the Tennessee, Ohio Valleys and the southern Appalachians, and Medicinal Plants and herbs (central and eastern) I completely recommend! The Wildflowers being my personal favorite. Both are good though. I wouldn't want to be without either. For those of you in the west Petersons also has one for your area. The other one I wouldn't be without is Nature's Garden.

Tim has read most of the Everest books listed and recommends them. He is a fan of Everest mountain climbing. The Climb being his new favorite. He is finishing this book now and really feels, to understand all that happened on Everest in the 1996 disaster you need to read this. There are a lot of strong feelings about the two sides of that. Jon Krakauer wrote a book Into Thin Air that Tim thinks did not give Anatoli Boukreev the credit or respect he should have been given for saving so many lives.Very strong opinions on both sides of it.
All of these and more favorites are listed in our  "book store" if you click through there and buy something we'll receive a small commission. I'll be be updating it periodically. We are big readers around here!

We have decided we need to unplug this Sunday!  You can read about what that means here on Unplugged Sunday. Tim has been working 6 days a week and I have been obsessing about this blog and trying to get things in order to start building birdhouses. I hope that works out.....I'm so nervous about it. I am just desperate to make some extra money. For a variety of reasons, I'm unable to get a job outside of the home, right now. So, I'm hoping to supplement our income a bit this way. Anyway, we are both pretty stressed right now. We just need to get away at least for one day. Not sure yet where we'll go, near some water would be my guess. Summer is not giving up easy here in the south!  Next weekend.....if all goes well, the plan is overnite camping and a nice hike in the woods!! I can hardly wait.

Hope you all are having a great Labor Day weekend. Check out those exhibits for us at the Sanders County Fair! We miss those. We just haven't found a fair around here that compares.
